China emerges as source of flexibility for suspended Qatari LNG, which creates a shortfall and undermines a three-year consensus that a wave of new capacity would tip the market into oversupply before 2030.

Prolonged price volatility in LNG markets is upending sales and purchase agreements (SPAs) as traders sound alarm over JCC/Henry Hub swings eroding fixed-price economics. “As US LNG exports surge to dent Asian demand and bridge the gap in Qatari supply, contracts must harden or fail,” analysts noted.

Asia’s key LNG buyers have made preliminary Alaska LNG offtake commitments, with Thailand’s PTT signing for 2 mtpa and Japan’s Tokyo Gas for 1 mtpa, while JERA, South Korea’s POSCO and Taiwan’s CPC also agreed tentative offtake – taking total volumes to 11 mtpa of the 16 mtpa Glenfarne aims to secure ahead of FID.
