Southeast Asia’s hyperscale data centre boom is set to lift regional LNG demand by about 16% a year through 2035, with combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) currently seen as the most viable technology capable of meeting data centres’ 24/7 reliability requirements at scale as grid-scale battery storage is expected to remain uneconomic across the region until 2035.
QatarEnergy is in negotiations with Venture Global, Cheniere Energy and Woodside Energy, to secure multi-year US LNG supply contracts through 2031. The move marks a shift from spot purchases as the Qatari state company seeks to honour long-term LNG export commitment while force majeure notices on shipments from Ras Laffan have been extended to November.
Europe is entering winter with gas storage at its lowest level in 15 years, forcing buyers to gamble on mild weather. “Time has run out in terms of expecting Qatari volumes, since most European customers have received force majeure volumes until the end of the year,” Poten & Partners Finance Advisor Melanie Lovatt said.

Baker Hughes has secured orders from Venture Global for gas-compression systems for the Cloud Connector Pipeline and a modular liquefaction solution for the Plaquemines LNG expansion. The compressors and related infrastructure will help expand Venture Global’s gas-transport and LNG infrastructure in Louisiana.
Singapore LNG Corporation (SLNG) is pressing ahead with a second LNG import terminal. Over 95% of Singapore's electricity generation is fuelled by imported LNG, hence Singapore’s trade & industry ministry supports SLNG’s drive to get a second FSRU into operations by the early 2030s.
Shell estimates the war involving Iran has removed 36 mtpa shortfall of LNG supply from the Middle East, President for Integrated Gas Cedric Cremers said at Gastech, while Oman sought to downplay shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz as “temporary.” Around 20 mtpa of the lost supply had been offset by new production, predominantly from North America – implying there is still a 16 mtpa gap in the global LNG markets.
Oil and gas prices have risen sharply after details emerged on drone attacks damaging Saudi Arabia’s East-West crude pipeline, which transports oil from the kingdom’s eastern fields to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. The pipeline recently carried around 4 million barrels per day, and had to shut down following the incident.
