Behind the current new-building boom in the LNG carrier industry, it must not be forgotten that there exists a large fleet of older ships, many now reaching 20 years of age or more.

These have been well-maintained with appropriate management and budgets, resulting in an incomparable safety record.

The majority of conventional LNG terminals are located in sheltered harbours or utilize a breakwater as protection from wave conditions that can cause berthed LNG carriers to undergo dynamic motions during cargo transfer.

At such locations, standard hydraulic controls are sufficient for safe manifold connection and disconnection of the loading arms. Arm motions after connection are also easily accommodated by standard swivel joints because movements are slow and not repeated constantly during cargo transfer.

The UK Department for Trade and Industry is establishing standards for flow measurement as LNG imports to Britain are set to rise. Asaad Kenbar, of Scotland-based TUV NEL, explains the latest developments.

With the decline of natural gas from the North Sea, the UK is no longer self-sufficient in production and is reverting to being a net importer. The proportion of liquefied natural gas to pipeline gas is expected to grow in the years ahead.

Natural Gas is the largest element of the UK’s primary energy supply, and gas-fired power plants are the main method of power generation.

4Gas is currently developing five LNG terminals globally and by 2015 we expect to have 10 to 15 regasification terminals operational or very close to a final investment decision.

The 4Gas strategy is to develop a global network of LNG terminals which will be available to LNG producers and other companies who seek access to growth markets.

In 2006 the International Energy Agency estimated that, in the Middle East and Africa alone, $1.05 trillion of investment in the oil and gas sectors would be required by 2030 to meet the world’s upwardly spiralling energy requirements.

With global gas demand expected to increase by around one-third by 2015 and a huge surge in LNG production expected to account for satisfying much of this, the global LNG industry is going to soak up a significant portion of this forecast global investment.

Snøhvit LNG approaches start-up to supply the US

The Snøhvit LNG project operated by Statoil has reached the final stages of development. Commissioning of the process plant is under way, and first gas from the offshore field will be landed in May.

The first LNG shipments are due to be made during the fourth quarter, ahead of the start of contractual deliveries on December 1.

Snøhvit marks Statoil’s debut as a supplier to the US natural gas market.
