Japan would have to import around 11 million tonnes more of LNG to exactly replace its current nuclear power capacity shortage of 9.7 gigawatts because of earthquake damage to nuclear power plants if the nuclear capacity remained offline in the medium term.

Japan’s largest LNG terminal, the Sodegaura facility with 35 storage tanks and operated by Tokyo Gas, suffered a gas leak caused by the earthquake but is now back in normal operation.

South Korea said it would supply LNG to Japan in the form of re-directed cargoes to be replaced at a later date because of nuclear power shortages caused by the earthquake, and Japanese utilities were also expected to bid for spot LNG cargoes worldwide, pushing up global prices.

Trelleborg Marine Systems, the Swedish supplier of fendering, mooring and berthing systems, said it supplied LNG producer Qatargas with three of its parallel motion fender systems for a fast-track project.
