THIS WEEK: Japan must think out of LNG box

Japan needs to engage in some strategic thinking on the Asian LNG price premium problem if it is to secure more control over its long-term energy costs, according to a leading Japanese economist.

The volume of Japan's future LNG imports at its regasification network (see graphic) may also depend on economic trends and Japan's electricity conservation efforts which have been stepped up since the March 2011 disaster, says Ken Koyama, Chief Economist at the Institute of Energy Economics in Japan.
