Russian LNG export boom

Russian LNG ‌exports rose by 8.6% between January and April to 11.4 mill tonnes from the same period last year, according to preliminary LSEG data.

This was due to supplies from the Arctic LNG 2 project, which reached 1 mill tonnes in the first four months of this year.

US ‌sanctions against Moscow over ‌the Ukraine conflict have constrained Russian LNG exports, particularly from Arctic LNG 2, where operations have been hindered owing to difficulty in securing buyers.

In April alone, total Russian exports of LNG rose by 13.2% from a year ago to ‌2.92 mill ‌tonnes.

Data also showed that Russian LNG ‌exports to Europe during the period ‌jumped 20.8% year-on-year to 6.4 mill tonnes. In April, they rose to around 1.6 mill tonnes from 1.2 mill tons ‌a year earlier.

Total exports from NOVATEK's Yamal LNG plant in the period fell by 1.5% y-o-y to 6.5 mill tonnes.

Meanwhile, the Gazprom-controlled Sakhalin-2, plant exported 3.7 mill tonnes in the first four months of 2026, up from 3.6 mill tonnes during the same period last year.

Claims and counter claims, as situation escalates. A South Korean ship operated by HMM, identified as the multipurpose cargo ship, ‘HMM Namu’, suffered an explosion in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, the cause of which is thus far unknown.

Due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, this has created a need for more tank storage capacity in India, local media has reported.

The Egyptian government has raised natural gas supply prices for its industrial sector, setting a minimum selling price of no less than $6.50 per MMBtu.

South Korea’s large diversified shipowning entity, Pan Ocean’s results have beaten market expectations in the first quarter of this year, helped by strong performance in its LNG and tanker businesses.

Lonnie steps up at Woodside

Woodside Energy has appointed Breyden Lonnie as Executive Vice President and COO Australia.

Lonnie has acted in the role since December, 2025, with responsibility for Woodside’s portfolio of operations and projects in Western Australia and the Bass Strait.

He has 24 years of industry experience encompassing a range of engineering, operations, planning and management roles in Australia and internationally.

For example, he served as Woodside’s Vice President North West Shelf from 2022 to 2025, overseeing the project’s ongoing operational and commercial success during its transition to a processor of third-party gas.

Spiking oil prices. Yesterday, Brent peaked at $126.41 per barrel, mainly due to the June contract rolling over into July, which was up around 1% to above $111 per barrel.

Apollo Global Management, Blackstone and KKR are vying to acquire a significant stake in the LNG Canada project from energy major Shell, according to sources talking with Reuters.

Malaysian energy giant, PETRONAS and Japan’s ENEOS Xplora have signed definitive agreements to formalise the latter’s re-entry into Malaysia LNG Tiga (MLNG Tiga).
