Northwest Europe is evolving beyond being ‘a market of last resort’ for US LNG, as rising gas prices on the forward curve are propping up the economics and profit margins for shipping cargoes across the Atlantic, analysts find. Just short of 70 mtpa nameplate capacity will be commissioned by 2019 from five US liquefaction projects.

Shell-chartered 'Maran Gas Apollonia' has become the first LNG carrier to transit the expanded Panama Canal. BP-owned 'British Merchant' is now following suit. Up to 550 LNG tankers are anticipated to transit the canal by 2021.

Canada’s largest private utility FortisBC is eager to find alternative offtakers from its Tilbury LNG facility after a deal with Hawaiian Electric faltered. Expansion of the Tilbury site is now at risk - the timeline will be pushed back, if no alternative buyer can be found. 

Yamal LNG, a flagship liquefaction project in the Russian Arctic, will have uninterrupted power supply through 50 of AEG Power’s Protect 8 three-phase units, based on double-conversion/topology. First LNG production at the Novatek-led project is targeted in 2017.

Oct 30 (LNGJ) - ABS has granted approval in principle (AIP) for the design for the CNOOC gas-block terminal. The unit functions as an offshore LNG receiving, storage, regasification and bunkering terminal. The terminal will house horizontal LNG storage Type C tanks. The storage volume of a single block can be varied from 5,000 cbm to 50,000 cbm, depending on the block and the overall combined storage volume can reach up to 300 000 cbm.

Eni decides on FID for Moz LNG by yr-end

With none of the targeted 60-70% debt financing for Mozambique LNG secured as yet, Italy's Eni said on Friday it would decide by year-end on whether to make a final investment decision.

Deregulation of Japan's energy sector heralds a growing aspiration for an Asian gas index, JERA president Yuji Kakimi said, cautioning that "quantitative LNG demand is less certain as Japan's nuclear reactors are restarted one by one - very slowly."

Privately-owned ENN of China is close to finalising deals for LNG imports into Zhoushan terminal, due operational in 2018. "We'll have a minimum of 1mtpa for sure, possibly 2mpta, and are in talks with several players," ENN vice-president Ma Shenyuan said today.

Buyers, spoilt for choice, have adopted a 'wait & see approach' but QatarGas does not see itself challenged. "We're optimising our established position but are not competing with US LNG," Alaa Abu Jbara, COO Commercial and Shipping at QatarGas said in Singapore today.
