Japan’s Mitsui, together with its Bangladeshi consortium partner Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Ltd (CPGCBL), is developing a combined-cycle gas power plant in Matarbari, Cox Bazar. With a generating capacity of up to 600 MW, it will be the second government-led JV power project that will run on regasified LNG.
Det Norske Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd (DNV GL), an international classification society, have given IHI the approval in principle for its design of a Floating LNG Power Station (FLPS). The concept is a combination of a FSRU and a power plant.
New Fortress Energy has delivered the first LNG shipment to JPS’s converted 120 MW Bogue power plant in Montego Bay. The ‘Golar Arctic’ carrier delivered the cargo from the small-scale Hialeah facility near Miami to the port of Kingston.
India’s biggest power producer, the state-run NTPC, is seeking to terminate a long-term LNG import contract as it perceives the fuel as “too expensive to be used in power generation. NTPC has notified GAIL India, which supplies gas through its affiliate Petronet LNG, stressing its inability to further execute the gas offtake contract as it cannot sell the electricity it generates from this fuel.
Aug 5 (LNGJ) - A floating gas storage unit (FSU), headed for Malta from Singapore, will enable Maltese citizens to “start breathing cleaner air,” prime minister Joseph Muscat suggested. Due to arrive by September, the vessel will store LNG which will then be regasified onshore for use in new gas-fired power plants.
Japan’s Saibu Gas has called off plans to start construction of an LNG-fired power plant, saying the 1,600 MW project was “postponed” – some observers say indefinitely. The decision was made after Kyushu Electric hesitated to sign a power purchase agreement.
China Machinery Engineering Corp (CMEC) is evaluating a 500 MW LNG-fuelled power project in Hambantota, southern Sri Lanka, which is meant to expanded to 1,000 MW at a later stage. President Maithripala Sirisena pushes for another 500 MW LNG-to-power plant just north of Colombo as he seeks to scrap coal-fired projects, or have them converted to natural gas.
Aug 1 (LNGJ) – Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific Company (AG&P) is gearing up to launch a virtual LNG pipeline to bridge the capacity demands for power in Southeast Asia. “The Philippines provides a unique challenge,” AG&P president Albert Altura said when announcing projects that integrate small-scale FRSUs and power plants, from 5 MW all the way up to industrial-sized plants.
AG&P has intensified talks with private developers of LNG facilities that can deliver 5 to 20 MW of decentralised power. “The rule-of-thumb for LNG is $1 million/MW for small-scale projects,” president Albert D. Altura said commented.
July 28 (LNGJ) -Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) has accepted a contract to build a 50 000 DWT bulk carrier with ILSHIN Logistics in cooperation with steelmaker POSCO.
