Chinese buyers return to spot LNG market

Chinese buyers return to the spot market amid a stark drop in prices. Beijing Gas and Zhejiang Energy reportedly procured LNG cargoes at around $10/MMBtu this August for autumn arrival.

CPC Corp, Taiwan’s state energy company, has stopped short of earlier intentions to import spot LNG cargoes for August and September delivery to compensate for lost nuclear power capacity. Instead, CPC intends to source super-chilled fuel from the Alaska LNG project in a more distant future.

PetroChina’s trading division strives to enhance the flexibility of its LNG portfolio by adding US LNG deliveries which come without destination clauses. Room for re-sale is paramount at times when trade tariffs on American products and LNG is inflating import costs to the Peoples’ Republic.

High spot LNG prices and subdued demand from industry made China’s LNG import plunge by more than 20 percent in the first quarter of this year. Fast build-out of liquefaction capacity in the US, Canada and Qatar will ease market tightness from 2026, fostering robust demand growth in Asia’s price-sensitive markets, the International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts.
