Statoil was awarded the operatorship and a large working interest for exploration in Eastern Indonesia. The Halmahera II block is located in a frontier basin with no wells drilled nearby. The Norwegian company will operate the licence with an 80 percent working interest. Niko Resources will hold the balance. The licence covers an area of more than 8,000 square kilometres. Statoil has farmed into three other exploration licences in Indonesia, Halmahera-Kofiau, North Makasar and West Papua IV, with LNG feed-gas potential.
