Tokyo LNG Tanker Co (TLT), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas, is to install two Wind Challenger wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP) systems developed by Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Oshima Shipbuilding Co, on a newbuilding LNGC.
Once delivered next year from Hanwha Ocean, the 174,000 cu m LNGC will enter into a a long-term charter with TLT.
The LNGC will be fitted with an ME-GA engine as the main propulsion unit augmented by two sails, which will be made of fibre reinforced plastic.
This is the world's second Wind Challenger to be installed on an LNGC. In addition, two bulk carriers have already been delivered equipped with the system and seven more are scheduled for delivery, MOL said.
One of the features of the Wind Challenger is a telescopic sail, which helps reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
As the world's largest owner of LNGCs, MOL said it remained committed to promoting a de-carbonised society.
Through proactive efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of LNG ocean transport, the shipping giant claimed it was addressing the increasing global demand with innovative and sustainable approaches.
