With the first LNG shipment via the Northern Sea Route from a non-Arctic source, Russia has opened a new chapter in its ongoing expansion of LNG trade in the Far East, in particular with China. Whilst the Portovaya LNG shipment aboard the Velikiy Novgorod is small, it does highlight Russia’s ongoing plan to diversify and improve the monetisation of its gas trade, even if it is not a quick process.
