Focussing on self-sufficiency and energy price stability, the Chinese government strives to power the country’s economic recovery from Covid-lockdowns with rising domestic coal production, rather than LNG imports. China’s coal mining output increased 5.5 percent to 1.15 million in the first quarter, while imports soared 63.1 percent to 101.8 million as thermal coal has become the preferred fuel for power generation and industry.
