Sea-LNG, the UK-registered non-profit industry foundation committed to furthering the use of LNG as a cleaner and superior maritime fuel, has urged an end to the misrepresentation of the status of methane-slip risks delaying the build-out of a cleaner LNG-powered fleet.
Methane slip from LNG-fuelled vessels is a recognised problem that the maritime industry has been actively addressing for well over a decade.
“Sea-LNG is disappointed to see the ongoing campaign of misinformation that misrepresents the progress the industry has made, and is continuing to make, to reduce slip,” said the foundation.
Methane slip is methane that evades the burning process because of engine inefficiency, for example, and can then escape into the atmosphere.
“Sensationalist claims lacking scientific evidence are a transparent attempt to distract the industry from investing in LNG - a solution that can deliver immediate greenhouse-gas emissions reductions and provide a low risk, incremental pathway for full decarbonisation of the maritime sector,” stated Sea-LNG.
The foundation has members across the entire LNG value chain including providers of the product, users, engine and asset suppliers and classification societies.
Sea-LNG is already recognised as an international leader in LNG matters.
Each member organisation commits mutually agreed human resources, data analysis and knowledge-sharing in support of Sea-LNG initiatives and activities and financially contributes via a membership fee.
