LNGC rates continue to soften

Atlantic LNGC freight rates continued to fall last week ending up at $16,250 per day last Friday, while Pacific rates also softened, according to Spark Commodities.

The US front-month arbitrage to northeast Asia, via the Cape of Good Hope, also closed out further.

"This (last) week saw the strongest signal to Europe for US prompt cargoes since December, 2022, driven by continuing falls in the JKM/TTF spread, as the JKM fails to match the recent TTF rally," Spark’s analyst, Qasim Afghan, explained.

A surge in LNG supply is expected to play a key role in rebalancing global gas markets in 2026, leading to stronger demand growth after a slowdown last year, according to the IEA’s latest quarterly Gas Market Report.

Number of LNGCs leaving US ports increases

Some 37 LNGCs, with a combined LNG-carrying capacity of 139 bill cu ft (Bcf), left US ports between 15th and 17th January, according to shipping data provided by Bloomberg Finance to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Nine vessels sailed from Sabine Pass, eight from Plaquemines, six from Corpus Christi, four each from Cameron and Calcasieu Pass and three each departed from Cove Point and Freeport.

KOGAS found liable for LNGC cargo tank defects

South Korea’s Seoul Central District Court has ruled that Korea Gas Corp (KOGAS) must pay around Won299.6 bill to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) following a lawsuit concerning alleged defective KC-1 designed LNG cargo tanks.
