To facilitate these increases, the storage volume of LNG at both liquefaction and vaporization terminals has also grown. For new developments, increased size of tanks has been preferred over multiple smaller tanks.

Natural gas liquefaction can be traced back to the nineteenth century when Michael Faraday first liquefied various gases. However, it was not until 1959 that this technology was used commercially when the world’s first LNG tanker, the Methane Pioneer, carried LNG across the North Atlantic to Canvey Island, east of London.

Following the mercury induced catastrophic failure of a heat exchanger at Skikda in
Algeria in 1957, the LNG industry had to move quickly to install mercury removal units (MRUs) prior to liquefaction.

At that time, the choice of absorbent was limited and MRUs had to be installed at the final stage of purification immediately prior to the cold box. This was not the best arrangement.
