Nhon Trach Unit 4 — one of two units at Vietnam’s first LNG-fired power plant — is scheduled to begin commercial operations on December 20. PetroVietnam invested an estimated $1.4 billion in the twin units, which have a combined capacity of 1,620 MW.

Qatar is progressing to expand its LNG production from 77 million tonnes to 142 million tonnes per annum in-country, with QatarEnergy CEO Saad Al-Kaabi announcing the first new mega-train from the North Field LNG expansion programme is expected to come online by the third quarter of 2026.

Japanese trio to import e-LNG from Nebraska

Itochu, Osaka Gas and Toho Gas agreed to offtake e-LNG, or synthetic methane, from a plant developed by TotalEnergies and TES in Nebraska. The Japanese trio took a combined 33.3% stake in the Live Oak e-NG project and the related offtake will help the project reach FID in early 2027.

Asian economies take advantage of falling LNG prices by switching from gas- to coal-fired generation. “Around 30% of the 380 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas demand growth has come from coal-to-gas switching since 2010, and virtually all of this happened in China," the International Energy Agency (IEA) finds.

Puerto Rico’s financial oversight board has approved a revised LNG supply agreement between Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) and New Fortress Energy affiliate NFEnergía. The revision is expected to save the country more than $4 billion in fuel costs over the duration of the contract.
