Jan 9 (LNG) - Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), MOL Ferry Co., Japan Petroleum Exploration (Japex) and Hokkaido Gas have signed two separate agreements between MOL and Japex and between MOL and the utility Hokkaido Gas for the supply of LNG fuel to two newbuild LNG-powered ferries in each port on the Oarai-Tomakomai route operated by MOL Group company MOL Ferry.
“The LNG fuel supply is scheduled to start in 2025 when the ferries will enter service. Japex will supply LNG fuel to the ferries at the Port of Oarai in Ibaraki Prefecture and Hokkaido Gas will supply it at the Port of Tomakomai in Hokkaido through the truck-to- ship method,” they added.
Japan’s Mitsui OSK Lines and group company Ferry Sunflower Limited said that the “Sunflower Kurenai” received its first LNG fuel supply at the Port of Beppu in Oita Prefecture.
The shipbuilding unit of Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has been granted approval for a liquefied natural gas fuel gas supply system (FGSS) for marine four-stroke, dual-fuel engines.
Mitsui Osk Lines, the Japanese shipping company led by President and Chief Executive Junichiro Ikeda and with an operating fleet of almost 100 liquefied natural gas carriers, has set out its future goals after a past year of LNG successes.
The latest Japanese ferry newbuilds on order with shipyards in Japan have opted not to have liquefied natural gas as part of the propulsion systems and will instead use exhaust-cleaners known as scrubbers to meet the sulfur cap on emissions from 2020 backed by the International Maritime Organization.
