The Canadian Atlantic Coast province of Newfoundland and Labrador has launched a liquefied natural gas export project backed by provincial Premier Andrew Furey and two First Nation groups of native North Americans and proposing to use gas previously reinjected during offshore oil production.

The Coastal GasLink pipeline to deliver at least 2.1-billion cubic feet of natural gas per day to the LNG Canada export plant being built in Kitimat in British Columbia will lay its first section of pipes in the ground in July and a peak workforce of 2,500 is expected to be on site in the months ahead.

Steelhead LNG, developer of the near-shore export plant proposed for Vancouver Island, is currently investigating the pipeline route to bring feed-gas from the Chetwynd area of northeast British Columbia to Sarita Bay on First Nation-owned land.
