June 5 (LNGJ) – LNG importer Argentina has held an inauguration ceremony for the Vega Pleyade natural gas project offshore Tierra del Fuego on the southern tip of South America, considered the most difficult gas production operation in the world. It has been supplying Argentina with 9 million cubic metres per day since February 2016. The venture is operated by French energy company Total. “Vega Pleyade supplies between 7.5 percent and 8 percent of Argentina's total consumption of gas,” said Energy and Mining Minister Juan Jose Aranguren. He added that the nation consumes around 130 million cubic metres per day of gas, including supplies from Bolivia, Chile and LNG imports. The Vega Pleyade field relies on extensive logistics and safety planning as it is located in rough waters where wind speeds are as high as 180 kilometres per hour.
