Jan 2 (LNGJ) - The new Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to reverse the previous government policy of working towards a phasing out of nuclear power and will even support the building of new reactors, reducing the long-term Japanese LNG requirement. In a broadcast interview Abe said the new reactors would be different from those at Fukushima that were hit by the earthquake and tsunami of 2011. Currently only two of Japan's 54 nuclear reactors are operating because of safety concerns. The country's LNG requirement to produce gas-fired power to replace lost nuclear capacity is at a record high.
