Japanese expert outlines LNG needs of quake-hit nation for the next year

Wednesday, 20 July 2011 08:52

The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and ensuing Fukushima nuclear disaster, have become a "life changer" in various senses for the global LNG business, as well as for the Japanese people and industry.

While the North American shale-gas revolution has been labelled as a "game changer", the latest events are giving signs of bringing about even greater changes to the global LNG business. These days Japanese media provide "electricity forecasts" in addition to weather forecasts, every day - showing expected peak demand and supply of electricity for the day - to enlighten people on power demand and supply situations and encourage them to use less energy.

Awareness

Many ordinary citizens now are aware that LNG has provided almost 30 percent of the nation's electricity even before the March 2011 earthquake that instantly wiped out 8.9 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity.
