May 24 (LNGJ) - Prosecutors in Brandenburg, the German state that encircles Berlin and whose state capital is Potsdam and where climate-change activism and disruption have been escalating, have charged five members of the “Letzte Generation” group, Germany's version of “Just Stop Oil” in the UK, with “forming a criminal organization”.

The five accused, one woman and four men, have been charged under section 129 of the German criminal code for involvement in a series of attacks in 2022 and 2023 against oil refineries, the Berlin-Brandenburg airport and the Museum Barberini in Potsdam. Their actions allegedly range from blocking oil tanker trucks and defacing an oil painting by Monet. Forming a criminal organisation in the German state carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and supporting such an organisation or recruiting supporters can result in a two-year prison term.
