May 4 (LNGJ) - Saipem, the Italian engineering company, has been awarded a contract by Gaz-System SA of Poland for the installation of a natural gas pipeline between Denmark and Poland in the Baltic Sea as a competitor to both LNG and Russian gas. The contract was signed by Saipem’s subsidiary UK Saipem Ltd and is worth around €280 million.

“The Baltic Pipe Project is a strategic infrastructure project developed by a joint venture between Gaz-System S.A. and Energinet.dk of Denmark and is co-financed by the European Union to create a new inter-European gas corridor that will supply gas directly from Norway to the markets in Poland, Denmark and neighbouring countries,” said Saipem. Specifically, the contract comprises the construction of around 275 kilometres of 36-inch, concrete-coated pipeline between Denmark and Poland in a water depth between 4 metres and 57 metres to be carried out by Saipem S-lay vessels.
