This week, Dutch Energy and Climate Minister, Rob Jetten, announced that talks were underway between the Government and Gasunie to increase short term LNG import capacity.
LNG imports can be less dependent on piped gas from Russia. Gasunie has been in discussions with the Dutch Cabinet about this for some time, the company revealed.
Various options are available. Specifically, Gasunie is currently investigating the use of a floating LNG terminal in Eemshaven, near Delfzijl, as well as expanding the capacity of the existing Gate terminal on the Maasvlakte, just outside Rotterdam.
With a new LNG facility in Eemshaven and the expansion of Gate, Netherlands’ LNG capacity could be doubled, from 12 up to 24 bill cu m per year, it was claimed.
Gasunie hopes to be able to announce more details about these options in the near future, the company said in a statement.
