EU Commission Highlights US LNG as Russia Alternative

European Commission President von der Leyen has proposed increasing US LNG imports to reduce Russian dependency. Von der Leyen discussed a potential LNG trade increase during a call with re-elected President Trump. Whilst the United States has already led European LNG supply for years, Russia has ascended as the second-largest supplier following Qatar’s pivot towards Asia, according to our data. Despite the war in Ukraine, Russian LNG remains largely unsanctioned, with imports in January-October 2024 exceeding equivalent 2023 levels.
