QatarEnergy, Qatar’s state-controlled energy champion, has agreed to supply LNG directly to Germany for 15 years from 2026. Whilst the contract’s nominal volume is relatively small, it has been regarded as a positive signal for a reorientation of Germany’s gas industry. Through the deal, Qatar won a new customer for new supply from its ongoing capacity expansion. Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi had previously warned that at current capacity Qatar would not be able to materially help alleviate a European gas crunch following the stop of Russian pipeline gas supply.
