The European Commission will attempt to work out a compromise between the three Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia on the construction of a regional LNG import terminal to reduce their dependence on Russian pipeline gas.
Lithuania still wants to build an LNG import terminal at its Baltic port of Klaipeda, while its neighbour Estonia has said several parties are willing to invest in an Estonian LNG terminal.
Latvia for its part says a regional LNG terminal for the Baltic states would already have the advantage of its underground storage facility in Incukalns, where enough gas could be stored for all three countries.
The Baltic countries are also considering a gas pipeline from Poland to Lithuania's capital Vilnius.
Such a pipeline would diversify gas supplies for Latvia because the Polish pipeline is connected with Germany's network.
Latvia has said it could also receive gas supplied from the new LNG import terminal being constructed in Poland near the Polish-German border.
