Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR) has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Syrian Ministry of Energy to supply the country with natural gas, petroleum products, and technical expertise.
The MoUs were signed on the sidelines of Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi’s meeting with a Syrian delegation, headed by Deputy Minister of Energy for Oil Affairs Ghiath Diab, MoPMR said in a statement.
One of the MoUs was aimed at establishing a framework for supplying natural gas to Syria for electricity generation, utilising Egypt’s national gas transmission network and FSRUs, while another MoU addressed Syria’s needs for petroleum products.
During the meeting, officials discussed rebuilding Syria’s natural gas and petroleum infrastructure with the assistance of Egyptian technical expertise.
The Syrian agreements followed the December signing of a MoU by Egypt with the Lebanese Ministry of Energy and Water to supply the Deir Ammar Power Plant with gas.
MoPMR claimed that Egypt continued to leverage its export infrastructure, including the Arab Gas Pipeline and Idku and Damietta liquefaction plants, to serve regional markets.
Notably, Egypt exported about 150,000–155,000 cu m of LNG to Greece, Italy, and Türkiye last year.
