Danish gas specialist Kosan Crisplant has announced a bunkering world record, completing a truck-to-ship LNG refuelling operation in in Finland in record time.
The bunkering operation was carried out using KC LNG's patented Y-piece component and system which allowed Estonian gas company Elenger to complete refuelling of a car carrier from four tank trailers in less than an hour and a half.
“In 2018, we released a new type of solution, the KC LNG Y-piece, with a promise that it would double the capacity of truck-to-ship LNG bunkering. [Now] Elenger has proven that it was not just an empty promise…. This is a world record bunkering time and an enormous time saver for all parties involved,” a spokesperson for Kosan Crisplant said.
Split fuel connection
The Y-piece component is an adapter to split a ship's fuel connection in two, allowing two tank trailers to connect to it instead of just one. This simple innovation allowed Elenger to transfer 172 cubic metres of LNG to the tank of the UECC-owned car carrier Auto Energy in just 1 hour 23 minutes.
“Currently, one of the barriers to widespread LNG usage in shipping is the cost. By cutting down bunkering times dramatically, the Y-piece helps to break down this barrier and make LNG a more economically viable fuel,” KC LNG said in a statement.
Headquartered in Aarhus, Denmark, Kosan Crisplant is part of Makeen Energy owned by Saudi industrial group Al-Ayuni Group for Investment & Construction.
Four-fold speed improvements
Designed to fit any kind of trailer, the component enables continuous operations as empty trailers can be swapped without the need to halt the process, saving time and money for ship-owners and fuel suppliers. KC LNG estimates that this can result in bunkering speeds as much as 400% of traditional truck-to-ship bunkering.
The bunkering operation for the Auto Energy was carried out at the port of Hanko, Finland with fuel from gas supplier Eesti Gaas.
“In addition to new passenger ships, new cargo vessels are changing to the LNG technology in larger and larger numbers. LNG will eventually replace diesel fuel among marine fuels, which will contribute to cleaner air and cleaner Baltic Sea,” Kalev Reiljan, member of the management board at Eesti Gaas, commented.
