US utility AES Corporation is set to launch LNG bunkering services for vessels on the Panama canal next year, having issued an Expression of Interest to the shipping community.
The proposed offering will be operated by Panama LNG Bunkering, a subsidiary of AES, in partnership with Canadian firm Seaspan Energy. The Seaspan Garibaldi, a 7,600 m³ bunker vessel will serve the waters of Panama, catering to LNG-powered vessels transiting the Panama Canal and Atlantic ports.
“We’re eager to engage with shipping lines, vessel owners, and operators seeking bunkering slots for 2025,” Ricardo Díaz, LNG Marketing and Origination Manager for AES, said.
AES expects to schedule spot contracts for the full calendar year with the launch of first LNG bunkering operations set for March 2025.
Smooth integration
As one of the most vital arteries of global trade, the Panama Canal is a sought after location for LNG bunkering services. AES hopes to bolster its position as a key player in the maritime fuel market while promoting cleaner energy alternatives.
“By initiating these early discussions, AES seeks to facilitate a smooth integration of LNG bunkering into client operations, helping stakeholders meet environmental goals and adapt to evolving fuel requirements for vessels transiting the Panama Canal and docking at Panamanian ports,” the firm notes.
Costa Norte
Last year, AES announced a partnership with Seaspan to develop LNG bunkering services focused around the Costa Norte LNG terminal in Colon, Panama. The terminal will offer temporary storage and reloading using Costa Norte’s 180,000-cbm storage tank, allowing different market operators to store their LNG temporarily and withdraw it on demand.
“The collaboration with our shipowner partner and the innovations at our Costa Norte Terminal position us as leaders in driving sustainable, efficient and affordable solutions to meet the growing demands of the market,” Miguel Bolinga, president of AES Panama, said.
