Greek LNG specialists Blue Grid and Elinoil have partnered to launch a series of LNG fuelling stations for road vehicles in Greece.
The firms expect the first station to begin operation in the first quarter of 2024 when it will provide LNG and CNG refuelling services.
“This partnership combines Blue Grid’s expertise in LNG supply and distribution with the extensive geographical presence of Elin’s network and will play a crucial role in the promotion of alternative fuels in Greece,” a spokesperson for Elinoil said.
Strategic investment plan
Elinoil is the largest fuel retailer in Greece and has been supportive of moves to advance LNG uptake across the nation. Construction is expected to begin shortly on the station in Attica, in the Thriassio region.
“Elin’s entry into the LNG-CNG market is part of the implementation of its strategic plan for the transformation of its network into integrated energy stations, while at the same time it is in line with its broader commitment to promote sustainability,” it said.
The partners have a long history of collaboration and in 2001, jointly created BlueFuel, the first LNG fuel supplier for road transport in the country. Last year, Elinoil transferred its 50% share in the business to Blue Grid.
Four new stations
Blue Grid has since taken a leading role in developing the country’s LNG infrastructure, announcing that it plans to build four LNG stations across Greece in the near term.
The firm expects to add one LNG station near Athens and one in Thessaloniki early next year. A further station is planned in the Patras, in the west of the country. This is scheduled for later next year and will be developed in collaboration with Kolokithas Fuels. A fourth station is then expected in Ioannina.
Earlier this year, Blue Grid and Mytilineos completed their first truck loading operation at DESFA’s LNG import terminal located on the island of Revithoussa. Headquartered in Atherns, Greece, Blue grid is part of Spanish fuelling firm Molgas.
