The Chinese economy has recovered swiftly after lockdowns were lifted and factories already operate at 87% of normal output since early April, pushing up energy demand. Australia emerged as China’s top LNG supplier, delivering a total of 77 cargoes in April and May – compared to just 10 cargoes lifted over the same period from the United States, where liquefaction capacity is at risk of shut-in due to low prices and expectations of depressed global demand well into 2021.
