Europe is turning to the US as the most flexible source of replacement gas for lost Qatari volumes, with the share of US LNG soaring to nearly 60% of all LNG arrivals into the EU since the Iran war escalated, according to Kpler data.
Saudi Aramco is preparing to tap the giant Jafurah shale gas basin in a bid to reduce oil dependence, positioning the Kingdom as a potential LNG exporter. Aramco CEO Amin Nasser singled out the field’s “huge” growth potential, though analysts doubt the Saudi gas market can absorb all the extra supply.
European Union energy ministers will endorse a full ban on Russian gas imports from January 1, 2028, an EU diplomat indicated. The ban would leave an estimated 15 bcm per year of Russian LNG needing replacement, with cargoes from Qatar, West Africa and especially from the United States poised to cover most of the shortfall.
