Hazard and safety probes for LNG tanks

Josef Rötzer, Hamish Douglas, Helmut Maurer
Dywidag International, Munich

The investigation of containments for the storage of liquefied natural gas has to be extended to their behaviour under blast wave conditions, dependent on the risk prevailing on the site.
As in the case of earthquakes (See LNG journal July/August 2005), the investigation of the blast load case must consider the complete tank structure.

It is September 2004 and a unique opportunity presents itself. I am sitting in another crowded room of engineers and operations managers struggling through yet another hazard and operability (HAZOP) meeting on a proposed offshore LNG terminal.

The participants are discussing the mystifying qualities, properties and characteristics of LNG as part of Chevron Corp.’s LNG Terminals of Excellence Project that included Port Pelican in the Gulf of Mexico.

Peru LNG to set nation on modern path

Joint venture partners, including Hunt Oil, Repsol and SK Corp. of South Korea, are making progress in development financing

Pampa Melchorita liquefaction plant on the Pacific coast will deliver into the North American market by way of Mexico in 2009

Peru LNG, whose major shareholders are Hunt Oil of the US and Spanish major Repsol, is on the brink of making more progress in financing and development of what is the second phase of one of the world’s most controversial energy projects.

The LNG joint venture is in talks with multilateral financial institutions, including the World Bank and the US Export-Import Bank, for $800 million in loans and guarantees that would encourage commercial banks also to lend to the $2.7 billion liquefaction project.
