Petronas LNG has signed a head of agreement with Hokuriku Electric to negotiate the renewal of an LNG supply deal for up to 0.54 mtpa for a decade starting 2028. The HoA underscores Japan’s reliance on LNG for power generation.
Cambodia is adhering to its plan to begin LNG imports in 2027, with the government’s timeline anchored by the 900 MW Botum Sakor LNG-fired power project. The plant’s first 450 MW unit is scheduled to start operation in April 2027, followed by a second unit in December.
Japan’s JERA is stepping up its LNG-to-power strategy across Asia, offering term LNG shipments and project finance. For India’s Torrent Power, JERA will deliver four cargoes per year from 2027 to fuel 2,730 MW gas-fired powergen capacity along with some city-gas demand.
JERA Americas is advancing an LNG-fuelled power project on Hawaii, developed at a cost of $1.5 billion for the 500 MW plant plus around $500 million for offshore LNG import terminal.
The decade of structurally cheap US gas is drawing to a close, with Henry Hub prices forecast to rise towards $5 per MMBtu by 2035 from below $3 per MMBtu, as LNG demand growth tightens domestic balances, Wood Mackenzie said.
Egypt is seeking to import more LNG as electricity demand this summer is forecast to rise 8% above last year’s peak of 40 Gigawatt. Regasification capacity has been maximised, while the Damietta LNG export terminal gets used to store cargoes for emergency use.
Nuclear restarts and coal has displaced LNG in the South Korean power mix as Qatari supply fell away, allowing utilities to defer procurement rather than chase spot cargoes priced above $20 per MMBtu. As a result, LNG’s share in Korean power generation fell to an estimated 22–24 percent in H1-2026, down from roughly 26–28 percent in H1 2025.
GE Vernova has secured an order to supply two 9HA.02 gas turbines and two H78 generators for Vietnam Electricity’s (EVN) Quang Trach II LNG-fuelled power plant, a combined-cycle facility expected to generate more than 1.6 GW. The plant, located in the Hon La Economic Zone in Quang Tri Province, is scheduled to begin commercial operations by 2030.
Kansai Electric, better known as KEPCO, is planning to renew Himeji No.1 Power Station in western Japan with high-efficiency combined cycle units to increase output and lower emission. Himeji No.1 is an LNG-fuelled plant that has been in operation for over 30 years, and the repowering is meant to raise output from 1,442 MW to 1,950 MW and thermal efficiency from 54% to about 63%. Start of commercial operation is planned for fiscal 2033.
Though the Middle East conflict disrupted 80 mtpa of LNG exports, fuel diversification helped stabilise gas and power prices across Europe’s five major markets at over €90/MWh in March, while month-ahead gas prices peaked at $19/MMBtu in April.
