Trinidad and Tobago, which is about the size of the US state of Delaware, has been pumping out LNG for the US market since the 1990s, but the first cargo from its new Train 4 was delivered to the UK last month, underlining the tiny nation’s emergence as a market-leading Atlantic Basin supplier.

LNG agreements designed to attract finance

The terms for the sale and purchase of LNG are evolving towards more complex and flexible relationships between suppliers and purchasers which will allow an increasingly global market in the future.
The ever more intricate and dynamic commercial relationships between LNG suppliers and purchasers are typically set forth in Sale and Purchase Agreements, which serve as the foundation for most LNG trades worldwide.

Shell International Trading and Shipping Co. has obtained Green Passports from Lloyd’s Register for all 25 of the liquefied natural gas carriers in its managed fleet.


The Green Passports were awarded by Lloyd’s Register following surveys and audits and a review of the relevant documentation.


Shell and Lloyd’s Register have led the way in the application and adoption of the Green Passport. Shell’s LNG carrier “Granatina” was the world’s first vessel to be awarded this recognition.


The Green Passport is a document that contains an inventory of all the materials onboard a ship that require careful handling or special awareness.
