Japan’s JERA is stepping up its LNG-to-power strategy across Asia, offering term LNG shipments and project finance. For India’s Torrent Power, JERA will deliver four cargoes per year from 2027 to fuel 2,730 MW gas-fired powergen capacity along with some city-gas demand.

Caturus takes FID on Commonwealth LNG

Caturus has taken a final investment decision (FID) on its 9.5 mtpa Commonwealth LNG export project in Louisiana, supported by $9.75 billion in total financing and several long-term offtake agreements. Construction just begun, with first LNG targeted in late 2029 and full operations by 2030.

PV Gas, part of PetroVietnam, has agreed with state utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN) to deliver LNG from Vung Ang regas terminal to the Quang Trach II power project. Unit II had been a 1.2 GW coal-fired power plant repurposed into an LNG-fuelled unit – in line with Vietnam’s 8th national power development plan.

Panama’s $1.15 billion AES Colón venture, an integrated LNG import terminal and power plant, is due to start full commercial operation on September 1. Investors inaugurated the project this week.

LNG-to-energy solutions, notably for distributed power, have made Wärtsilä one of the biggest supplier of gas- and liquid fuel-fired power stations in the 5 - 600 MW range. Such baseload and/or grid stability plants are used predominately as ‘wind chasers’ and ‘sunset balancers’, compensating for intermittent supply of renewable energy – soon also on the island of Aruba.
