Russia’s new opposition to the Sakhalin II liquefied natural gas project on environmental grounds has dimmed the view of foreign investors and coincided with some irony with the first large oil and gas conference to be held on the Russian Far East island.

Russia turned up the pressure on major foreign-led energy projects valued at around $60 billion by ordering a full environmental investigation of Royal Dutch Shell's Sakhalin II venture.
