Enagas gets go-ahead for new LNG terminal

Enagas, the Spanish natural gas company and LNG terminals owner, said it plans to build a new reception terminal at El Musel, near the city of Gijón in northern Spain.

Golar posts loss; gives mixed LNG overview

Golar LNG, the shipping company with a midstream investment strategy, reported increased operating income of $23.9 million for the third quarter because of improved spot vessel earnings, but still posted a net loss for the three months of $5.9M because of interest rate swaps.

Quoddy Bay LNG’s father-and-son team Don and Brian Smith explain the latest progress in their LNG venture with the Passamaquoddy tribe

When members of the Passamaquoddy Native American tribe on Pleasant Point in the US state of Maine, together with area businessmen, contacted Smith Cogeneration of Oklahoma in the spring of 2004, Chief Executive Don Smith said he knew right away the region would be an excellent location for an LNG terminal.

This article is the second in a three-part series examining the evolution of long-term LNG sales contracts. The first part of the series addressed trends and issues in the 1960s and 1970s. In this issue the author highlights some of the key features of such contracts in the 1980s and 1990s, many driven at least in part by the rise in project financed liquefaction facilities and the increased number of players in the market. The final part of this series will address trends and issues in the 2000s.

Hazard and safety probes for LNG tanks

The investigation of containments for the storage of liquefied natural gas has to be extended to their behaviour under blast wave conditions, dependent on the risk prevailing on the site.
As in the case of earthquakes (See LNG journal July/August 2005), the investigation of the blast load case must consider the complete tank structure.

One of the great public misconceptions is that LNG carriers and facilities are favored terrorist targets

An offshore liquefied natural gas terminal proposed for Long Island Sound between New York and Connecticut poses safety and security risks that would require more firefighters, escort boats and other measures to prevent accidents or terrorist attacks, according to the US Coast Guard.

In addition to the local opposition to East Coast LNG terminals from citizens, security requirements are also now raising potential obstacles to projects even moving beyond the planning stage.

John McKay reports on the project that will bring imported LNG into Texas for the first time when it is completed in less than a year

Freeport LNG in Texas is winning the race to be the first onshore import terminal to open in the United States in 25 years as its project nears completion.

Imports to the US began with the construction of a terminal in Everett, Massachusetts, in 1971. The last mainland terminal to be constructed was Trunkline LNG’s Lake Charles facility in Louisiana, which was completed in 1982.

Liquid spill hazard investigated for LNG tanks

In Parts 1 and 2 of this contribution the hazard scenarios earthquake, impact and blast were described. In Part 3 a further hazard scenario, liquid spill is investigated. Part 4 will close the hazard and safety investigations with the examination of the fire scenarios, valve fire and adjacent tank fire.
