There is an enormous divide in charter rates in discussions for liquefied natural gas carriers up until September 2023 compared with October to December.
The attractive spot LNG charter rates in the West of Suez market remained mostly limited to the 2-stroke segment, though most of these deals were being concluded for loadings in late March 2023.

London-based global shipbrokers Simpson Spence Young have given an upbeat outlook for LNG carrier charters and vessel sales and purchases in the coming year after a record-breaking 2022.

Shipbrokers in the London market reported a move to more charter activity in September as August had seen the LNG market feel very subdued on a prompt basis with notably fewer spot fixtures than in the previous month.
“In the LNG carrier charter market, brokers noted that some owners soon became no longer interested in trying to cash in on what had been a prosperous spot market to instead focus on term discussions,” according to the latest London broker report on the past month’s events.
A trading chronicle of the last month of LNG shipbroking activities captured the revival of the North Asian markets with the “miraculous upward trajectory” of LNG prices, helped by a variety of factors such as plant outages in all Basins, South Korean coal caps, Chinese coal restrictions, while favourable arbitrage conditions were further helped by hold-ups in the Panama Canal.
Oct 29 (LNGJ) - Shipping charter rates for LNG carriers in the spot market increased over the past week by a further $20,000 per day. Rates were quoted at an average of between $100,000 per day and $110,000 per day West of Suez. The same levels of spot rates were also talked about for the East of Suez charter market for vessels of between 155,000-165,000 cubic metres capacity, according to various brokers.
