The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) of the Philippines has approved a five-month expansion of Meralco’s power purchase agreement (PPA) with First Gas Power Corp. The deal secures 1,000 MW of electricity supply from the Sta.Rita power plant in Batangas until June 25.
LNG imports to the Philippines are forecast to jump 508% through to 2029, spurred by the fast-depleting Malampaya field which forces gas power plant operators to source fuel from abroad. Projections from the Philippine Energy Plan (PEP) show the transition to LNG could cost $3.9 billion (PHP218 bn) over the next four years.
PacificLight Power (PLP), affiliate of Meralco Power Gen, has completed and commissioned an LNG-fuelled power plant (100 MW) on Jurong Island, Singapore. The fast start unit, powered by Siemens turbine, will provide ancillary services and supplement power supply from PLP’s existing 830 MW combined-cycle unit.
