Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has signed new supply agreements to expand the use of bio-LNG fuel on MOL-operated LNG-fuelled car carriers. Titan, part of Molgas, will supply bio-LNG fuel in Northwest Europe, while Axpo will take charge of supply in the Mediterranean region, where new agreement enables bio-LNG bunkering at Spanish ports including Malaga and Barcelona.
GAIL India and Mitsui O.S.K Lines (MOL) have signed a 10-year time charter for the LNG carrier GAIL Bhuwan in a move expected to expand India’s LNG shipping capacity, improve import logistics and support the country’s growing gas demand.
French major TotalEnergies and liquefied natural gas bunkering partner Mitsui OSK Lines of Japan said their first France-based LNG re-fuelling vessel built in China has completed sea and gas trials.
Mitsui OSK Lines, with an operating fleet of almost 100 liquefied natural gas carriers, held its annual general meeting at the Shinagawa Intercity Hall in Tokyo on June 23, though few shareholders attended and social-distancing was in place as the company pledged to further develop LNG-powered vessels and bunkering.
Sembcorp Marine, the Singapore shipbuilding and repair yard owner, said its business has been substantially affected by Covid-19 slowing work on ships and platforms, including at yards building LNG vessels for bunkering, imports and floating power projects, while the oil price slump has hit orders.

French energy major Total and Japanese shipping company Mitsui Osk Lines have signed a long-term charter contract for a second large LNG bunkering vessel to be delivered from China in 2021 and deployed in the Mediterranean
Sept 25 (LNGJ) - Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines said it attended a naming ceremony at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China for a newbuild liquefied natural gas carrier jointly ordered with China Cosco Shipping Corp. to serve the Yamal LNG plant in Russia. MOL said that the 174,000 cubic metres capacity vessel was named “LNG Dubhe” after a star in the constellation Ursa Major and is the first of four newbuilds ordered in 2017 for the Yamal LNG project.
MOL and its partners also delivered three ice-breaking LNG carriers to the Russian project between 2018 and early 2019, which are currently engaged in cargo transportation in the Northern Sea Route. “For the time being, ‘LNG Dubue’ will be engaged in the transport of the LNG from trans-shipment terminals in Europe or a location where ship-to-ship transfer operations are carried out,” added MOL.
Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) is to more than double its fleet of FSRUs to take advantage of a construction boom for gas-fired power stations in developing regions, such as in Southeast Asia.
Lithuanian LNG and oil terminal company Klaipedos Nafta said it had joined with Asian partners from South Korea and Japan in bidding in the tender process for an LNG import terminal on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and gave more details of consortium plans.
Klaipedos Nafta has operated the Lithuanian LNG import terminal since 2014 at the Baltic Port of Klaipeda as well as an LNG re-loading station.
The Lithuania facility is a floating storage and regasification unit under charter from Hoegh LNG.
Klaipedos Nafta said it was bidding for the Cyprus project with consortium partners consisting of South Korean companies Samsung C&T and Posco E&C as well as the Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and the utility Osaka Gas.
The second consortium includes Monaco-based LNG shipping company Gaslog, a unit of Spanish utility Enagas and the Italian gas network and infrastructure company, Societa Nazionale Metanodotti (Snam).
The third group of bidders is led by China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering.
The original deadline had been set for the end of March and has now been moved to September 6.
The Cypriot Natural Gas Public Company (DEFA) has also invited expressions of interest for the supply of LNG for the FSRU.
The tender for the supply of the LNG is the second part of the gas-to-power project.
Klaipedos Nafta said it was participating in the tender as a contractor and partner of the consortium.
According to the published specifications, the LNG terminal will include an FSRU, a jetty for mooring the vessel and a jetty-borne gas pipeline to secure supply of natural gas to the Vasilikos power plant, the largest in Cyprus.
The project has been granted European Union support amounting to a grant of 100 million euros ($111.4M).
If winning the tender, Klaipedos Nafta said it would join with MOL and Osaka Gas to provide terminal operator services for a period of up to 20 years.
