Gasum, the Finnish state-run natural gas company and leading Nordic LNG supplier, has entered a partnership with Swedish truck manufacturer Scania for more gas-fuelled access in the region and a filling station at the Scania logistics centre.
Gasum is building a new filling station offering liquefied natural gas and compressed gas in Södertälje in Sweden.
The new station is located near the Södertälje Syd road junction in direct connection with Scania’s production plant and will open in the first half of 2024.
“The partnership between Gasum and Scania enables the station to be built at this logistics hub and so marks a significant development in promoting a more sustainable transport system in the region,” said the Finnish company.
Gasum, which is also Sweden’s largest biogas producer, said it was continuing to expand gas infrastructure in Sweden by opening the new gas filling station in Södertälje.
Both trucks and ordinary vehicles will be able to refuel with LNG or CNG at the Södertälje-Syd road junction.
Gasum noted that the partnership with Scania enabled the filling station to be built in this strategic location where access to land would otherwise have been challenging.
”The partnership with Scania is perfect from all perspectives. They are at the forefront of gas-powered truck development and the fact that they provided land for this project demonstrates the strength of a shared focus on sustainable solutions and secure energy supply in this growing area,” explained Sharareh Edström, Head of Business Traffic Sweden at Gasum.
Gasum said that the new filling station in Södertälje provided improved access to better technology compared with the older existing stations in Järna and Älvsjö, which will be decommissioned.
The company said that there would be LNG dispensers and two CNG dispensers from the outset.
This is more than the standard design and would allow faster refuelling and “considerably greater capacity” compared to older stations.
Jonas Strömberg, Sustainable Transport Solutions Manager at Scania, said he was very happy to be able to contribute to the expansion of biogas and LNG infrastructure in Sweden.
“The strategic location of the new station between the E20 and E4 means that it will play an important role in the transition to a sustainable transport system,” explained Strömberg.
“Building the station also comes at a good time for Scania since there is rapidly increasing demand for flexible transport solutions,” he added.
New Fortress Energy Inc., the New York-based LNG and power project company, has signed an agreement with a unit of the Mexican Federal Electricity Commission for the supply of regasified LNG from a new import facility within the next three months to two generating plants in the northwest state of Baja California Sur.
Under the agreement, New Fortress will provide the equivalent of an estimated 250,000-500,000 gallons of LNG (20,000-40,000 million British thermal units) per day to CFE’s CTG La Paz and CTG Baja California Sur power plants.
“We are pleased to support CFE’s transition to cleaner, more affordable and reliable energy,” said Wes Edens, Chairman and Chief Executive of New Fortress.
“This contract will help create significant fuel savings and emissions reductions for the benefit of the people of Baja California Sur,” added Edens.
The US company will supply regasified LNG to the plants to replace fuel oil via the company’s onshore receiving terminal facilities being completed in the port of Pichilingue in Baja California Sur.
The terminal is anticipated to come on line and begin the supply of natural gas to CFE in May 2021, though the company has released few details on LNG delivery and storage.
Pichilingue Port's LNG facility, located just north of La Paz, the Baja California Sur state capital, will be the third in Mexico when it enters service.
The two other Mexican LNG terminals are on the Gulf Coast at Altamira and south of Baja California on the Pacific Coast at Manzanillo.
The Pichilingue LNG facility will introduce natural gas to Baja California Sur for power generation for the first time. The state is in the lower part of the Baja California Peninsula and also currently lacks adequate onshore gas infrastructure.
New Fortress has a similar import facility in Jamaica in the Caribbean using floating storage that began operations in 2016 and another project in Puerto Rico.
The company is also working on a venture to supply regasified LNG to a 300 megawatts gas-fired power plant at Puerto Sandino in Nicaragua.
DNV GL, the leading European classification society, said liquefied natural gas was set to thrive in a strong gas market on the route to energy transition through 2050.
Sembcorp Marine of Singapore has completed the acquisition of the intellectual property rights of Oslo-listed Sevan Marine for US$39 million, including the Sevan subsidiary HiLoad LNG and in an additional purchase has bought the outstanding 5 percent of HiLoad held by a minority shareholder.
Malaysia has opened up its natural gas and LNG market to third-party participants as it starts commercial operations at its new Pengerang regasification terminal in Johor.
