Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD), the leading Swiss-based developer of low-speed gas and diesel engines for marine propulsion and a leading supplier to the global LNG fleet, has announced a change in leadership.
Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD), headquartered in Switzerland, said WinGD’s latest generation of X72DF-2.1 engines will power 25 vessels as part of the QatarEnergy’s North Field East (NFE) project, the biggest LNG carrier newbuilding project in history.
Winterthur Gas and Diesel, the Swiss-based marine engine and technology developer, said it had updated the X72DF dual-fuel power package favoured by many LNG carrier owners.
The company, also known as WinGD, said it now had four versions of the engine to provide ship design flexibility while helping owners reduce installed power and emissions.
“The X72DF is the best-selling engine in WinGD’s portfolio and accounted for every low-speed engine ordered for a newbuild LNG carrier in 2020,” said WinGD.
“It is also applicable on Suezmax tankers, Panamax and sub-Panamax containers and Capesize bulk carriers,” added the company.
Alongside baseline design improvements to the engine, an option is now available to optimise lower power output in five and six-cylinder configurations.
These new versions are also available with enhanced methane slip-reducing X-DF 2.0 technology.
“Our most successful engine model is now available in four configurations,” said WinGD executive Volkmar Galke.
“These options reflect the varied demands on shipowners to design vessels more efficiently, reduce installed power and cut emissions dramatically,” added Galke.
“Whatever route shipowners choose to meet these demands, there is now an X72DF that will work for them,” he declared.
The base version, X72DF-1.1, incorporates the company’s new engine control architecture, WinGD Integrated Control Electronics (WiCE).
“Several design improvements focused on enhancing reliability, while simplifying production and installation were made along with the addition of a modular scavenging concept to improve control over combustion and emissions,” said WinGD.
“The X72DF-1.2 features a selected power/speed range with a lower specific fuel consumption. This configuration designed specifically for ships like the LNG carriers will be attractive to owners and shipyards seeking to limit installed power in line with the IMO’s energy efficient design indexes for newbuilds and existing vessels,” stated the Swiss company.
Winterthur Gas & Diesel, the Swiss-based specialist marine propulsion company, has unveiled new technology designed to slash methane emissions and cut fuel consumption in its X-DF dual-fuel engines used by LNG carriers and other vessels.
Swiss company Burckhardt Compression, whose LNG offerings include the Laby brand of compressors and boil-off gas solutions, said it signed a five-year service agreement covering nine LNG carriers with a total of 12 Laby-GI Compressors onboard.
German marine engine maker MAN Energy Solutions, a supplier of propulsion for many of the world’s LNG-powered vessels as well as the most modern LNG carriers, said its two-stroke, dual-fuel portfolio has now logged more than 500,000 operational hours.
