The world’s largest energy traders and liquefied natural gas portfolio holders, Trafigura, Vitol and Gunvor said their record year for revenues and profits in 2022 was unlikely to be repeated in the near future.
The European energy crisis is expected to last for several years and in addition to limits on global liquefied natural gas supplies there has also been less than adequate investment in regasification facilities.
Global commodities firm Trafigura said in its fiscal 2021 report that revenues, earnings and liquefied natural gas volumes increased amid rising prices, partly because of stronger LNG demand from Asia due to low hydropower reserves this year in China and also lower coal production.
The Commonwealth LNG project in the US, a liquefaction and export plant proposed for the west side of the Calcasieu Ship Channel near Johnson Bayou in Louisiana, has had its revue schedule suspended by regulators to let the company catch up with the process.
Trafigura, the international commodities group, reported an almost doubling of six-month profits as its LNG, crude oil and gasoline trading desks were the stand-out contributors.
