The 27-nation European Union has brought into a law to try and reduce methane emissions from the energy sector in Europe and across the world, including LNG imports, and will police the emissions of other nations such as the USA and China and decide whether imports from outside the EU are compliant with European standards.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said the government was taking additional measure to increase liquefied natural gas cargo deliveries to the Asia-Pacific by the Northern Sea Route to offset the loss of pipeline gas customers in the European Union.

Energy ministers of the 27-nation European Union failed to reach an agreement at a council meeting in Brussels on imposing a maximum price for natural gas that would have impacted markets including, LNG cargo pricing and pipeline supplies from Norway.

The European Union’s Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson is in Algeria for two days of talks on strengthening the EU’s energy cooperation with the Algerians after the failure of an EU summit last week to agree a natural gas price cap that would have affected LNG trading.

The European Union was scheduled to hold an emergency energy council meeting in Brussels on September 30 to discuss the consequences of the two leaking Nord Stream I and Nord Stream II gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea that appear to have been sabotaged and to also address high energy prices.

The European Union and Japan said after meetings in Brussels that they were committed to work closely to address the current challenges in energy markets worldwide, including LNG and pipeline natural gas supplies.

European Union ministers have been unable to find any common ground after they met in Luxembourg to find a way to control natural gas and LNG market prices and their effects on power markets, while the talks showed deep divergence between the 27 member states.
