The surge in liquefied natural gas spot prices in the past year is shown in the latest Japanese government data, with contracted shipments valued at $9.30 per million British thermal units compared with $5.70 per MMBtu a year ago.
Japanese spot cargoes contracted in April to arrive in Japan at a later date cost an average of $9.10 per MMBtu compared with $5.70 per MMBtu in April 2017, a rise of 59 percent and along with oil-linked, long-term contract deliveries will be adding to the nation’s energy import costs as oil prices rebound.
Japanese spot LNG cargo prices contracted in January surged 31 percent to an average $11.00 per million British thermal units, an increase of $2.60 MMBtu for each shipment compared with the $8.40 per MMBtu paid in the same month of 2017.
Japanese government figures show that average spot liquefied natural gas cargo prices for Northeast Asia in December rose by $2.20 per million British thermal units to $10.20 per MMBtu compared with the same month a year ago.
Japanese liquefied natural gas imports dropped for a third month, with falling Middle East cargoes being partially offset by Asian deliveries as the nation opted for fewer shipments at 15.5 higher costs than a year ago.
Japanese government figures show that the average delivered price of spot liquefied natural gas shipments arriving in Japan was higher at an average $5.90 per million British thermal units in April compared with $5.80 per MMBtu in April 2016.
