Japanese liquefied natural gas imports increased again in May even at higher prices while thermal coal deliveries dropped and nuclear plant re-starts plans continued to advance.
The US Department of Energy published its latest LNG monthly export data with European nations such as France, Spain, the Netherlands and Italy being joined by Japan in the list of leading destinations while Sempra’s Cameron LNG plant in Louisiana shipped the most expensive cargoes for a second month.
Japanese spot LNG cargo prices for September recovered after a plunge in the previous month and were contracted at $4.50 per million British thermal units, though were still down on the same month a year ago.
Japanese liquefied natural gas imports declined last month at the expense of thermal coal imports even as LNG cost the nation 20 percent less than a year ago and US shipments to Japan overtook those from Russia for the first time.
