The UK government is actively considering chartering or funding a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) to shore up gas storage and import capacity amid warnings the country could face supply shortfalls by the 2030s. The option emerged in the government’s response to a consultation by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) on gas supply security, which found the market alone is unlikely to deliver sufficient resilience against high-impact stress scenarios.

Cyprus-registered Premier Energy’s has committed to procure one LNG cargo of 1 million Megawatt-hours (MWh), equivalent to about 100 million cubic metres (MMcm) of natural gas, for delivery through Greece’s Alexandropoulos floating storage and regas unit (FSRU). The cargo is scheduled for April 2027.

Near-term availability of floating LNG terminals is tightening fast, with Fernley expecting a fresh wave of vessel conversions as floating storage and regas units (FSRUs) have achieved their highest-ever share of global LNG imports.
